What I'm listening to: Play My Game - The Donnas
Moonlight & Whiskey has a cover and I can’t wait for everyone to see!
The cover of a novel is likely the most special part of the publishing process for a debut author. I’m going to guess that for multi-published authors it’s not nearly as big of a deal, but for us first timers, it’s Christmas morning, July 4th, and Thanksgiving wrapped into one.
This is one of those milestones in publishing that an author worries and stresses over. We want every detail just so, and drive our editors mad in the process, (sorry Sue). But when you see the end result––that beautiful cover that not only represents the book, but the building of an author’s career––it’s like being Ralphie and finally opening your Red Rider. Giddy is the first word that comes to mind.
Awe is the second. Like staring up at a July sky watching the fireworks light up the night sky, it’s a time of both wonder and fascination. How on earth did I do this? Why all the fuss about something I wrote? Someone believed in me, believed in my words enough to create this beautiful representation of the words that I wrote.
How can I ever thank all these people that believed in me enough to make this dream become reality? I can’t…I give thanks to every person who helped me along the way. The ones that love my story and think the world needs to read it. Moonlight & Whiskey’s heroine, Avery, is a bit unconventional as romance heroines go. That means these people took a chance by choosing me, by investing in my words and believing in my ability not only to bring her to life but make her a heroine women can relate to.
A friend once told me that a first book is like a first child. The new parents want everything to be perfect. They fuss and they worry and maybe coddle or dote. The second book is more like a second child where the parent is more prepared, less worried, and less concerned about the “perfect”. I’m sure that’s the case as this first book for me was absolutely my first child, and everyone who put up with my nitpicky and fanatical cover design deserves a medal.
Come the September 11th reveal, I hope you’ll find my debut cover as amazing as I do. Please, stop back and help share, and tweet my baby to the rest of the world. Oh, and maybe a contest or two to follow.
